Specification Conformance

Verify that a PD conforms to 802.3at or 802.3bt standards to assure interoperability.

Conformance to IEEE 802.3at or 802.3bt standards is necessary to assure PD interoperability  with all PSE’s in all connection environments while also assuring safe and reliable operation.  PD designers are challenged by the complexity of IEEE PoE standards and by the fact that PD controller components, by themselves, do not assure a conforming powered device.

Product Recommendation

PoE LLDP Emulation

Verify that a PD properly negotiates power and operates within LLDP negotiated power budgets.

If your PD utilizes Link Layer Discover Protocol to negotiate power with a PSE, testing for compliance to the LLDP portion of the 802.3at or 802.3bt standard will be just as important as any other aspect of conformance testing.   All 802.3at Type-2 and 802.3bt Class 4-8 PD’s are required by their respective standard to support PoE LLDP power negotiation.

Physical Layer Integrity

Physical Layer Integrity

Asses LAN Physical Layer Integrity at the PD while powered by a PSE.

Much like PSE ports, PD 10/100/1000Base-T interfaces must function in all connection environments with DC power sharing the same wires.

Avoid quality issues in the field by automating acceptance tests for PDs.

As a hardware intensive feature of any powered device, PoE powering is vulnerable to component and process defects that can lead to safety and interoperability problems in the field.  Highly automated PD power testing can increase confidence in the integrity of every device shipped.
